Tourism Development and Promotion
It's important for a country or a visitor destination to market itself properly, otherwise nobody would know about it, and would be less inclined to visit it! That's why so many of the big Travel and Tourism industry companies place so much importance on development and promotion.
One of the ways a place, especially a country, town or city, is promoted is by the formation of a Tourism Board. A Tourism Board is a group of business leaders, culture and faith groups, event organisers and local town/city/country representatives (such as politicians or celebrities) that come together to raise the profile of an area/areas.
One of the tourism board representing Britain is Visit Britain, the marketing name of the British Tourism Authority, which has the responsibility of marketing Britain's culture and attractions to a global audience, in an attempt to boost tourism. It is a Public Sector Organisation, as it is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
A recent campaign by Visit Britain involved sending a new London bus on a tour of the USA under the "Britain is GREAT" campaign banner, in conjunction with the hosting of the 2012 Olympic games in London.
There are other types of tourist boards too. Bolton has its own tourism board, Visit Bolton, which has the same responsibilities as Visit Britain, but on a more local scale.
