Travel Agents
A travel agent is a organisation (or person) that organises holidays, including flights, tickets, attractions, car hire, accommodation and more for a client. The regulatory body for Travel Agents is ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents).
A tourist can approach a travel agent, either online or on the high street, and have instant access to all the resources that they will need to plan their holiday and make it successful. The Travel Agency sector is very diverse, there are large providers, such as Expedia and The Co-Operative Travel, and there are smaller, high street travel agents, with only a few members of staff. There are also sole-trader travel agents too.
Membership of ABTA is crucial for most tour operators, as it is a sign that they are reputable and can be entrusted with the customer's money to put together their perfect holiday. ABTA membership reassures customers.
The three main types of travel agents in the UK are:
Multiplier Travel Agents - A partnership between two or more travel agents, who then broker the services offered by the provider to the customer.
Miniples Travel Agents - A small number of branches in a specific geographical area.
Independent Travel Agents - A company that has no connection with any of the companies whose products they are brokering.
Please see the "Trade Associations/Regulatory Bodies" page for more information on similar organisations to ABTA
