Trade Associations
Trade associations and regulatory bodies are formed to reperesent the interests of their members. They can often benefit customers too, for example, if the tour operator enters administration, and it was a member of one of the trade associations or regulatory bodies, then other members of the same association can pull together to ensure that all the passengers stuck in a foreign country can get home safely.
Some examples of trade associations are:
ABTA - The Association of British Tour Operators - This body represents British tour operators of all sizes, and it can act as a representative of the industry on the national stage as well, especially when speaking out against a new government policy or service that will affect the industry.
FTO - Federation of Tour Operators - This body represents air tour operators and lobbies Governments and their organisations to recognise the benefits of air tours and air travel other other forms of travel. They also set out guidelines for members to follow to ensure a quality standard across their member companies.
CPT - Confederation of Passenger Transport - The CPT represents the bus, coach and light rail industries. They act as a forum to discuss new legislation, regulation, practises and standards across their industries. They also lobby government about transport policy and also set out guidelines that members have to comply with to maintain quality standards. They publish manuals to ensure compliance with the latest rules and regulations, available to members only.

Regulatory Bodies
Regulatory bodies set rules and guidelines for all members of trade associations, or all parts of the industry, to follow, for a better service to customers and to help raise the profile of their industry.

National - Our Government is reponsible for legislation covering all parts of the Travel and Tourism Industry in the UK, for example, Railway and Airport security, and venue Halth and Safety regulations.
Local - They carry out a lot of work in their areas (usually a town or city), such as enforcing food hygiene regulations, ensuring compliance with the law and inspections of hotels and food outlets.
